Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus review: The Samsung phone you really want this year

The Galaxy S9 is great, but Galaxy S9 Plus is a neatly good phone, and one power consumers should get if they cannot choose between the two.

In previous years, the plus model was similar to the Galaxy S, but it was big, with a larger battery. This year, the S9 Plus S9 comes with no additional feature: the second camera lens on the back. This 12-megapixel telephoto sensor is expecting Galaxy S9 Plus with the ability to take photos of depth-of-field pictures that blur in the background so that it stands out of your photos.

Size, weight, battery life and other variants, but if the screen size is not important to you, the second camera is more shelling for Galaxy S9 Plus. All other core features, including the 12-megapixel dual-aperture camera, will make its debut with all the Galaxy S9 phones.

Interestingly, the Galaxy S9 Plus is only Samsung's second phone to get a dual camera, falling in line after Galaxy's Note last August 8. Samsung got a more trend than a year delay, so its phones are still preparing for the lost time. The fact that this dual-camera setup is not in the Galaxy S9 is Samsung's high-end variant looking at the photo feature.

In fact, by giving the Galaxy S9 a rear camera, the larger Galaxy S9 plus two rear cameras, and Galaxy Note dual cameras plus a digital stylus, Samsung can justify three price tires to match the features of each phone. The model makes sense and reflects Apple's own structure with iPhone 8, 8 plus an iPhone X.

Unfortunately, despite the combination of the second telephoto lens on the plus, the main camera has the same weakness as the S9's dual-aperture lens: it displays photos in low-light conditions and they are not sharp, either. If you want to get a phone from the S9 family, you would like to pay for a plus.

This review highlights the differences between S9 Plus and S9. 12-megapixel dual-aperture camera (you should not be confused with dual-camera setup), other Snapdragon 845 processor, AM microSD, see my full Galaxy S9 review.

Editors' note: The ratings are temporary until the end of the final test, including the ongoing camera and battery tests.

What the Galaxy S9 Plus has over the Galaxy S9

Let me tell the differences between the two phones.

Portrait mode

You can use a 12-megapixel telephoto lens to take photos, but you want to do this for 100 to 100 times for portrait mode.

The same setup in Galaxy Note 8, S9 Plus' Portrait Mode app called Live Focus. You have control of the slider on your blur intensity and "skin tone" called "cosmetic mode" and airbrush your features.

The Samsung Portrait mode comes behind the iPhone X and iPhone 8 plus lighting extras. Those phones allow you to set the lighting tone from natural to dramatic. But what's special about Samsung Portrait Mode is that you can edit Blur after taking a photo.

You can also switch between the depth-of-length portrait (clop-up) and the vague, wide-Conan version of the same shot. The shooting process may not be in theater in the iPhone X, but I like the practice. And you can still apply a dozen filters in the photo editor.

Larger screen size

The Galaxy S9 Plus has a larger 6.2-inch screen advantage, which provides more space for viewing media and interacting with the screen.

Galaxy S8,

A larger screen will be more important to spread around your fingers. I find the S9 more comfortable and bigger, but with the introduction of Samsung with last year's Galaxy S8, the thin dimensions keep you from feeling like you're pressing a roof shingle - even with my little hands.

Bigger battery

As with last year's models, the S9 Plus also comes with a 3000mAh battery with a capacity of over 3,500mAh.

Our Looping Video Test in S9 Plus Airplane mode was just over 17 hours and two runs. In fact last year the 18-hour Galaxy S8 Plus is less than an hour less than average, so we'll keep testing on other units and update these results.

So far in our tests, S9 Plus lasted for at least three hours than my Galaxy S9 Review unit, but the test will continue and I will update this review if the tests are improved.

In real-world usage, Galaxy S9 Plus continues for a full working day. I'm constantly using the phone during my testing period, and I have always decided that I have enough battery to take me out of the morning every night - but not the last night. If you want to stay away until midnight, you may feel more comfortable with a headache.

Still, the S9 Plus recharges quickly - from 1 to the hour, power off for 40 minutes - can also boost up 30 minutes of storage on a fast charger.

Is the Galaxy S9 Plus worth the extra price?

The Galaxy S9 Plus price

If you like the big screen, there is no brain option between the Galaxy S9 Plus and the Galaxy S9 if you do not want to leave behind the Portrait Photo Craze.

The larger, more sophisticated Galaxy S9 phone, the S9 plus cost more than the regular S9. Prices vary by retail and currency, but for example, Galaxy S9 Plus costs more than $ 130 on S9 with US costs.

If you are trying to curb your costs, the S9 Plus phone is not a buy. And at the end of the two years of ownership, you cannot close paying more for this phone than you do for the smaller Galaxy S9.

Among the main features such as screen quality, simple photography, battery life and speed, it is equal to iPhone X or surpassed Apple's best phone. The iPhone X S9 Plus lops up when it comes to additional features such as Face ID (Intelligence Scan) and Animations (as opposed to AR Emoji).
